A suspicious package has prompted a lockdown of U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in North San Diego County.

The package was found outside Camp Pendleton’s main gate near Harbor and San Rafael drives. All gates from Interstate 5 onto the military base were closed due to the investigation, the Oceanside Police Department said.

The closures prompted a SigAlert on Interstate 5 at about 4:45 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol communication. Oceanside police advised drivers to expect heavy traffic in the area and to find alternative routes.

Little details were provided about the package that prompted the closure. NBC 7 is awaiting more details from Oceanside police and the U.S. Marine Corps.

This is a developing story. Details may change as information is released.
