Rhode Island College has named Fernando Torres as an assistant men’s basketball coach.
“We are thrilled to welcome Fern back to Rhode Island College,” said Ferry. “Not only does he bring an intimate understanding of our rich tradition, but he also brings his own invaluable experience as a head coach. Fern’s expertise and eagerness will have an immediate impact on our program. The loyalty and selflessness that he brings with that approach will fit in seamlessly with our staff.”
Torres joins Coach Ferry’s staff after spending the past four years as the head coach at North Providence High School. In just four years at the helm, Torres led North Providence to back-to-back Rhode Island Div. II State Championship titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24, as well as a regular season championship in 2024-25. Torres also led BCRI, one of Rhode Island’s premier AAU programs as its 17U head coach during the 2025 club season.
Torres returns to Mt. Pleasant Ave where he was a member of Bob Walsh’s 2012-13 team that went 26-4, won both the Little East Regular Season and Tournament Championships and qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championship.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Rhode Island College in 2014, Torres started his career teaching in the North Providence School District.
As he established himself as a teacher and coach, he furthered his education, earning a master’s degree in educational leadership/administration from Providence College in 2020.
