The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, directed by Peter Jackson and based of course on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, were a cinematic sensation. The fandom has created plenty of memes, with one now being addressed by a Hobbit himself.

There’s one meme that always gets a laugh from Lord of the Rings fans – the idea that Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) goes through the whole trilogy without ever learning the name of his ally Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Hobbit and elf are both part of the Fellowship of the Ring, but the two never actually exchange words throughout the whole trilogy, and when Frodo is reunited with the rest of the Fellowship after his ordeal at Mount Doom, he says all of their names except Legolas’.

The Lord of the Rings is full of adventure and battle scenes. However, the trilogy also has its funny moments, which helps lighten the mood.

While on the promotional trail for his new movie The Toxic Avenger, Wood was asked directly about the famous meme by ScreenRant. Wood confirmed he’d seen it, and mused, “He doesn’t say his name. I know. He must, though. It comes from that scene where he is reunited with The Fellowship. He says everyone’s name except for Legolas. He just smiles at him.” That caused his co-star Peter Dinklage to quip, “It’s like an awkward dinner party.”

Wood continued on, “At the Council of Elrond, I feel like he is named. ‘You have my bow.’ I suppose he doesn’t say, ‘I’m Legolas, you have my bow.’ I don’t think he knows his name. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. But I love this theory.” Aragon (Viggo Mortensen) does say Legolas’ name at the Council, so maybe Frodo picked it up then.

Liv Tyler and Orlando Bloom talk about returning to Middle-Earth.

Orlando Bloom Wants To Return To Middle Earth

The door is open for Orlando Bloom to return as Legolas, since there’s set to be another Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, set to release in 2027. The timelines mean Legolas could appear in the movie.

“I always think that if Pete says ‘Jump,’ I say, ‘How high?’” Bloom said in an AwesomeCon panel discussion, via Collider. “It’s funny because I think the elves go through so much of this world so many times because they’re ageless. I was in The Hobbit, and it was really interesting revisiting the world. It was so different from Rings as an experience. It was a beautiful time, but this idea of kind of going back is like… ‘Absolutely, who wouldn’t want to go back to that place?’

Bloom went on, “Being in that headspace of Legolas is awesome. My ADHD is gone; I am focused. And that’s something that I would always embrace because it’s this crazy, meditative state of being all-knowing and all-seeing, which is such a cool feeling.”

The Lord of the Rings can be streamed on HBO Max.
