After a two-year wait, the new season of Twisted Metal is finally arriving. Season 2 is set to debut on July 31, but ahead of the premiere, early reviews have started coming in, giving the show a higher score on Rotten Tomatoes than the first time around.
Currently, Twisted Metal Season 2 is holding an approval rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is notably much higher than the 67% score that was earned by the freshman season, though it’s also worth mentioning that Season 1 has a 93% score from the audience. Season 2 won’t have an audience score until after the new episodes debut, so it remains to be seen how much fans will agree.

In any case, it’s off to a great start. Critics are saying that the new season is even more bonkers than the first, but that this is a good thing. Twisted Metal is perhaps a show that thrives the more it embraces its dark humor and more chaotic elements, as those were major aspects of the original video games, after all. Some critics even admit that they weren’t expecting the new season to be so enjoyable, making Season 2 a pleasant surprise.
“The fact that Twisted Metal’s second round is just so damn fun is a delightfully pleasant surprise. There’s really no reason this should work as well as it does,” as Trent Moore of Paste Magazine stated.

A new sneak peek at Twisted Metal Season 2 includes footage of the big tournament inspired by the games.
Another review written by Daniel Kurland for Bloody Disgusting noted, “Twisted Metal wants you to breathe in the exhaust fumes, stare into the blinding headlights, and escape into high-octane insanity, which is exactly what it accomplishes. It’s turn-your-brain-off-petal-to-the-metal madness that’s still full of surprises.”
“Double the chaos, double the insanity, and double the epic action!” Mama’s Geeky critic Tessa Smith also wrote. “The stakes have never been higher. New and returning cast all bring their A-game.”
It was certainly reasonable for fans to expect for mayhem in Season 2. While there had been a lot in Season 1, some viewers still lamented how there was not the famous tournament that was a part of the story like in the video games. Along with making the tournament focal to the storyline in Season 2, the new episodes also bring in other fan favorites that gamers might appreciate, including Mr. Grimm and Axel.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick developed the series with showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith. It features an ensemble cast that includes Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Anthony Carrigan, Joe “Samoa Joe” Seanoa, Will Arnett, Richard de Klerk, Patty Guggenheim, and Michael James Shaw.
The first season of Twisted Metal is streaming on Peacock, while Season 2 is set to drop on July 31.
