Tracking the Tropics!

Tracking the Tropics!

  • June 24, 2025

TROPICS WATCH: WHAT’S BREWING THIS WEEK?

The calendar says late June, and the Atlantic isn’t wasting any time reminding us hurricane season is wide awake.

Right now, eyes are on a couple of areas in the tropics, and while nothing is an immediate threat to Florida, here’s what you should know:

🌊 Atlantic Disturbance: Showers and storms are stirring up associated with a low pressure system about 900 miles ENE of Bermuda, and could develop later today. As of now, it’s a 70% chance over the next 48 hours and the next 7 days.

🌴 African Wave Train Starting Up:It’s a little early, but the tropical waves rolling off Africa are starting to perk up. While none of them show signs of development just yet, this signals the gradual ramp-up toward the heart of hurricane season in August and September.

💡 The Bigger Picture:We’re still in a building La Niña pattern — which historically means less wind shear and a more active Atlantic basin. It doesn’t guarantee storms for us, but it does mean the environment is becoming more favorable for systems to form.

Bottom Line:No threats to Jacksonville or Florida right now — but the tropics are stirring, and this is the time to stay informed, check your hurricane kit, and remember… quiet tropics in June often flip the script later in summer.

I’ll be tracking every development — candid, clear, and without the hype. Stay with News4JAX for updates.
