Jewish groups are warning that premature recognition of Palestinian statehood could unleash more violence in the Middle East, as the Albanese government signalled it would break with the United States and Israel over one of the biggest sticking points in the protracted conflict.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers said recognition of Palestine was a matter of “when, not if”, adding his authority as a leader of Labor’s right faction to the growing push, while Foreign Minister Penny Wong left open the prospect of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing Australia’s recognition at the United Nations in September, when other leaders will make that step.
