When it comes to the foldable industry, Samsung has not only been a pioneer but also a leader, especially with the boundaries it keeps on pushing with its Z Fold and Z Flip series. It seems to be now going with a more ambitious approach with the tri-fold phone that has been in the works for quite some time, and said to be a more advanced device with a flexible form factor. Users have been hooked ever since the company teased the tri-fold prototypes and have been eagerly waiting for the official release window to be revealed. Similarly, the tech giant’s stepping into the XR space is another product unveiling that the tech community has been anxiously looking forward to. The South Korean giant has finally cleared the air and confirmed its plans for the trifold smartphone and XR headset release.
Samsung’s next leap: Tri-Fold smartphone and XR headset coming in 2025
While we have all been waiting for Samsung to take the next leap, the company has put an end to the ongoing speculations about its tri-fold smartphone and extended reality (XR) headset by confirming during its latest earnings call that the devices will be coming out before the end of 2025. The two product releases would be a bold step forward by the tech giant in both mobile and immersive technology. Samsung also emphasized working on AI-powered devices across its Galaxy ecosystem.
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z tri-fold is expected to have two hinges that fold inwards, helping keep the screen safe by enclosing the device when shut. Compared with Huawei’s Mate X ultimate, it stands apart as the latter folds outwards and offers less protection and durability than Samsung has planned for its tri-fold. This would give more advantage over the competition and potentially even help it grow in the foldable market.
Samsung is looking into an October launch window for its tri-fold device, which could potentially make it the first major global company to bring a tri-fold smartphone, as Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone in late 2026. In the same earnings call, the tech giant also shared its plans for the launch of the XR headset, which is also set to come out by the end of the year. The headset would be the first to come with the Android XR platform, which was developed in collaboration with Google.
If we look at Samsung’s decision to jump ahead of Apple in both foldable smartphones and XR technology, it is a more proactive strategy, unlike its slow-paced approach in the past few years when it came to innovations. This could give the company a real edge over the market and even help establish itself firmly before Apple’s products enter the picture.
