STORRS, CT – UConn running back and return specialist Mel Brown (Stone Mountain, GA) has been named to the 2025 Jet Award Preseason Watchlist, recognizing him as one of the nation’s top return specialists heading into the college football season.

The Jet Award, named in honor of 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “the Jet” Rodgers, is presented annually to the top return specialist in college football. Brown joins an elite group of candidates being recognized for their exceptional abilities as kick and punt returners.

Brown has established himself as a dynamic dual-threat player, excelling both as a running back in the offensive backfield and as a game-changing return specialist on special teams. Last season, Brown was second in the nation in kickoff returns, averaging an impressive 29.1 yards per return on 17 attempts. His explosive ability was on full display with a spectacular 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the regular season finale at UMass.

The Jet Award selection process begins with semifinalist announcements in late October, followed by finalist selections in mid-November. The winner will be announced in December and honored at the annual awards ceremony.

Brown and the Huskies open their 2025 season on Saturday, August 30 against in-state foe Central Connecticut at home at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
