Drawing from her biggest inspiration, the city of San Diego, artist Kate Joiner will showcase her work at this weekend’s Liberty Station ArtWalk.
The event — will be held Friday, Aug. 1 to Sunday, Aug. 3 — will feature Joiner’s work along with pieces from roughly 175 other artists. Joiner, a local mother, is known for her masterpieces that shine a light on San Diego’s beloved neighborhoods and communities.
“I’m constantly inspired by the rich layers of history, culture, and natural beauty that make this place so special,” Joiner said. “Whether I’m exploring the coastline, wandering through its streets, or reflecting on the city’s evolution, I’m captivated by how it continues to change and grow. I love capturing these moments—both past and present—and reinterpreting them in a contemporary style, all while celebrating the ever-shifting landscape of my beloved city.”
A San Diego State graduate, Joiner said she was inspired by her former professor, Janet Cooling, to infuse a “personal, introspective element” into her work.
“My technique has developed through constant practice — painting all the time, over and over — until my personal style began to reveal itself,” Joiner said. “The more hours I spent at the easel, the more I noticed my preferences emerging: the type of paint I use, the brushes that feel right in my hands, and the colors I naturally gravitate toward.”

Aside from acrylic pieces, visitors can also expect artists featuring their photography, glass and ceramics, jewelry, and sculpture. For families, there will also be a KidsWalk with a variety of hands-on art activities and experiences.
The ARTS DISTRICT at Liberty Station has earned its place as San Diego’s premier venue for arts, museums, dining, and entertainment. The venue will have a perimeter fence, even though admission is free. The fence allows attendees to enjoy beer and wine (for those 21 years and over), while strolling around the event, rather than having to remain in a beer garden. Guests are asked to show their ID to receive a wristband to be able to purchase alcoholic beverages.
The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1 for the VIP Preview pARTy, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3. Attendance and parking for Saturday and Sunday are free.
