A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the greater New York area and New Jersey Saturday (local time), days after a powerful quake rattled Russia’s Far East.
An earthquake measuring 3.6 magnitude struck New York City and New Jersey late Saturday (local time). This comes just two days after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Southern California, with tremors reported in Los Angeles, and three days after the deadly 8.8 magnitude quake struck Russia’s Far East, triggering tsunami warnings.
The 8.8-magnitude quake, centred roughly 119 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka Peninsula — a city of around 180,000 people — was confirmed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) as tied for the sixth most powerful earthquake in recorded history.
The Inland Empire quake struck at 9.32 am Thursday (local time), with shaking felt across Southern California.
It was followed by a magnitude 3.1 aftershock, the USGC said. The smaller 3.1-magnitude temblor shook the Rialto area nearby. About an hour before that, the Rialto area saw two smaller quakes – magnitude 3.0 and 2.8, ABC News reported. Jolts were reported by people in Jurupa Valley, Eastvale, Ontario and even as far as Redondo Beach.
No damage or injuries were immediately reported.
