Victoria Mboko was competing at much lower level tennis tournaments earlier this year.

Mboko has now beaten Coco Gauff at the Canadian Open, which is the first time she has ever beaten a top 10 player in her career.

There has been a big reaction to the 18-year-old’s latest victory, with Mboko predicted to surge up the WTA rankings.

Mboko continues to scale the rankings, but earlier this year she actually lost to a player who is now ranked outside the top 200.

Mboko began the 2025 season ranked at world number 333 and had only ever played one WTA main draw match before.

The Canadian teenager was still competing on the lower-level ITF Tour, and began her 2025 season by winning 22 consecutive matches without dropping a set and collecting four titles in the process.

As a result of her success, Mboko had already climbed over 120 places in the WTA rankings and was hoping to continue her winning streak at the ITF event in Macon, France, in February.

However, Mboko fell at the first hurdle in Macon after being beaten in the first round by Raluka Serban, 6-2 6-3.

Serban is the current number one player from Cyprus, a country that has had one Grand Slam finalist, and she was ranked the world number 195 at the time of beating Mboko.

While Mboko has quickly moved on from this defeat and just gone from strength to strength, Serban has actually fallen outside the top 200 and is now ranked at world number 230 after losing her last four matches.

Serban is one of nine players that Mboko has lost to in 2025, and by far the lowest ranked.

Mboko transitioning from ITFs to the WTA Tour means that she is more likely to lose more matches due to the higher level of competition.

That being said, Mboko has still won 84% of her total matches this year, with four of her nine defeats coming against players ranked inside the top 20.

The average ranking of players that have beaten Mboko this year is 62, which is higher than her current WTA ranking of world number 85.

One of the players to actually beat her this year is Gauff, who beat Mboko at the Italian Open back in May.

Mboko has now got revenge over Gauff and is now into the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 level tournament for the first time in her career.

This now feels a long way away from the player that was beaten by Serban at an ITF tournament earlier this year.
