When the athletic administration at Moravian University looked back at the 2024-2025 season, the school’s No. 10 sports highlight was the football team winning the Chesapeake Challenge Bowl Series – Cape Charles Bowl in November.

The result was a 35-14 win over Shenandoah University to cap a 7-4 campaign and the team’s first season over .500 since 2015, to go along with a pair of 5-5 performances in 2016 and 2018.

The game also marked the first postseason appearance for Moravian since 2015, an honor earned by the team finishing third in the 2024 Landmark Conference standings.

The Chesapeake Challenge Bowl Series was introduced in 2023 and includes two teams from the Landmark Conference against two teams from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in the Cape Henry Bowl and Cape Charles Bowl.

As the Landmark champion, Susquehanna advanced directly to the NCAA Division III Playoffs, while second-place Wilkes and third-place Moravian still got to experience some postseason action against Washington & Lee University and Shenandoah, respectively.

Obviously, the ultimate goal for Moravian and the other teams in the new Landmark Conference is to win the conference championship and go on to the playoffs, but the River Hawks have been dominant across both years of Landmark play, going 6-0 each season and winning both titles.

The chance to play in a bowl game had to be a nice consolation prize, though, as well as motivation for the new season ahead.

In the conference’s inaugural year, Moravian was 3-3 in Landmark games (4-6 overall) and finished tied for fourth place. The Greyhounds improved to 4-2 in conference games in 2024 to finish behind Susquehanna (6-0) and Wilkes (5-1).

Moravian will open its 2025 season on the road at Muhlenberg College on Sept. 5 and have four nonconference games to gain some momentum, before visiting Lycoming on Oct. 4 for the start of Landmark play.
