ROCKFORD (WREX) — Brooklyn Gray, a key player in St. Louis’ WNIT championship win in 2024, is embarking on a new journey by transferring to the University of Rhode Island. Gray, a Rockford native, is eager to conclude her college basketball career with a fresh start.
“I picked Rhode Island because I felt they were the best fit for me and my future. I want to play overseas,” Gray said. She expressed admiration for head coach Tammy Reiss, describing her as “an amazing person” who made her feel welcomed during her visit.
Gray brings not only her basketball skills but also a contagious positive attitude to the team. “I bring a lot of energy. I’m a big people person so I’m always joyous and happy-go-lucky around everybody,” she said. Her passion for the game is evident as she remarked, “I like to get in people’s faces. It’s all for the love of the game.”
Reflecting on her time at St. Louis, Gray cherished playing with fellow Rockford native Peyton Kennedy. “Peyton Kennedy, that’s my dog. She helped me so much in my experience at St. Louis,” Gray said, expressing gratitude for the support she received during her time there.
Gray’s connection to Rockford runs deep, and she takes pride in representing her hometown. “It means the world to me to be able to put on for Rockford. Sometimes Rockford doesn’t get a lot of love,” she said. She emphasized the talent and spirit of her city, saying, “Rockford has some heart. Rockford has some hustle.”
During a visit to Auburn High School, with her old jersey displayed on a chair for our interview, Gray reminisced about leading the school to its first Regional title in 33 years. “Being in this gym makes my heart so warm because there are so many memories,” she said. Gray credits her roots in Rockford and her experience at Auburn for shaping her into the person she is today.
Beyond her school, Gray attributes much of her character to her family, particularly her mother, Danielle Potter. “My mother, just how giving she is and how caring she is for the community,” Gray said, highlighting the values instilled in her.
As Gray moves forward to Rhode Island, she carries with her the clarity and balance basketball provides. This new chapter marks an exciting continuation of her hoops journey.
