The fast-growing Canyon fire is threatening areas around Piru and Castiac along the Ventura-Los Angeles county line.

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. near Holser Canyon Road, northeast of Piru — a small, unincorporated town in Ventura County not far from Castaic Junction, where Interstate 5 meets Highway 126.

Within two hours, it had grown to more than 1,000 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Evacuation orders

Evacuations have been ordered in these areas:

  • In Ventura County, all of the Lake Piru Recreation Area; east of Piru Canyon Road to the Los Angeles County line; east of the community of Piru (east of Center Street and Route 126 to the L.A. County line. More details here.
  • In L.A. County, the Hasley Canyon and Romero Canyon areas, roughly east of the county line, north of Route 126 and south of Romero Canyon Road. Details here.

Closures

Road closures include:

  • Piru Canyon Road at Main Street.
  • Lake Piru Recreation Area, which is under an evacuation order.
  • Lake Hughes Road from two miles north of Ridge Route Road to Pine Canyon Road.

Shelters

  • An evacuation shelter is open in the East Gymnasium of the College of the Canyons, at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road. The closest parking lots are Lots 5, 6 and 7.
  • Large animals can be evacuated to Pierce College, at 6201 Winnetka Ave. in Woodland Hills.
  • Small animals can be evacuated to Castaic Animal Care Center, 31044 Charlie Canyon Road, or to the Agoura Animal Shelter, 29525 Agoura Road.
