SAN ANTONIO, Tx — Tonight, San Antonio said goodbye to the King of Accordion. Flaco Jiminez’s final curtain call took place at the Carver Community Center.
Jimenez had a career that spanned over 70 years. The grammy award winning artist who helped birth Tejano music was born here in San Antonio, but people traveled from all over to celebrate his life. Diego Ramirez Jr. Drove 5 hours from Monahans, Tx to say his final goodbye.
“I was so blessed to hang out with him a couple of times.” Ramirez Jr said.
Two people who would never miss Jiminez’s final curtain call were the Tejano music icon’s right hand bajo sexto player Max Baca and his best friend Josh Baca.
“Flaco had a way of making everybody feel special when he’d sit down and talk to you one no one,” Max Baca said. “When he’d leave, you’d feel special because that’s the way he made you feel.”
“His spirit,” Josh Baca said. “His magic. It’s his magic that I’m going to miss. It’s never going to be another Flaco. There will never be another Flaco.”
Flaco Jiminez lived to be 86 years old. Many called his music the Sound of San Antonio.
