Tucson man sentenced for attempted murder of ex-bosses at Phoenix office

  • August 8, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Tucson man will spend nearly three decades behind bars for attempting to murder his former bosses at a Phoenix office.

Zane Hammond, 34, was sentenced to 29 years after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted murder.

In Nov. 2023, Hammond, who was a commercial truck driver in Tucson, drove to the United Freight Services headquarters in Phoenix armed with a shotgun. Court documents state that Hammond had abruptly quit his job with United Freight Services after management reprimanded him for his hygiene and for not following the rules of driving a commercial vehicle.

Surveillance video shows Hammond marching into the president’s office, firing a shotgun at him. The victim was able to avoid the shot by flipping his desk and taking cover. Hammond then aimed the rifle at the company’s vice president while attempting to load another round.

Video from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office shows Zane Hammond going into the United Freight Services headquarters and firing a rifle at his former boss.

Video captured the vice president tackling Hammond and holding him in a chokehold until Phoenix police arrived.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell called the crime a violent and premeditated attack.

“He drove to Phoenix with a shotgun and a mission to kill. That’s not rage, that’s premeditation,” Mitchell said. “Thanks to sheer bravery, no one died. Now, he will spend nearly three decades in prison, where he belongs.”
