A man is in critical condition after a fire engulfed his apartment on the top floor of a Bronx apartment building, FDNY officials said Friday.
Firefighters started receiving calls about excessive smoke rising from the six-story building on Bronx Park East and Thwaites Pl. in Pelham Parkway around 1 p.m. and arrived at the scene about five minutes later, according to officials. They found a man believed to be roughly in his 50s unconscious and unresponsive in an apartment on the top floor, in which the blaze originated, Deputy Chief James Sangiamo said.
First responders rushed the victim to Jacobi Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition, officials said.

The smoke eaters were able to “aggressively extinguish the fire and confined it to one apartment,” bringing it under control in about an hour, Sangiamo said.
Another civilian suffered minor smoke inhalation but refused medical attention. A firefighter also sustained a minor injury and was transported to Jacobi Hospital, according to FDNY officials.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
