Lifeguards and San Diego Fire Rescue were sent out Friday after a boat capsized.

The incident took place offshore from Camino de la Costa in the Bird Rock neighborhood, according to SDFD.

Five people were on the boat when it flipped off La Jolla, according to SDFD spokeswoman Candace Hadley, who said the people who had been aboard were all taken to the hospital, including one person in critical condition. The other four patients’ injuries were not life threatening, she added.

While it’s still early in the investigation, Hadley said that the capsize was believed to have been caused either by a mechanical issue or by a wave, and ha=d no connections to a smuggling attempt.

Sky Ranger 7 flew above the scene and transmitted back images of a few boats on the scene, tending to the relatively small overturned watercraft, its engine visible on the turtled boat. At the coast nearby, half a dozen or so lifeguard pickups stood by, as did multiple SDFD trucks.
