The San Antonio Spurs just signed a player for the 2025 NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder, but he might not be what they need.

The San Antonio Spurs are looking to make a big splash this season. The last few years have been kind to the Spurs, as they’ve been able to land three generational talents in consecutive years.

Victor Wembanyama has already become an All-Star, while Stephon Castle became Rookie of the Year last season. Dylan Harper is projected to be a star-level player as well.

That hasn’t stopped them from adding to their roster. The Spurs signed David Jones-Garcia to a two-way contract after his Summer League heroics.

And in a surprising move, the Spurs re-signed De’Aaron Fox to a $229 million deal, ensuring that the former All-Star will stay with them for years to come.

But in a move that few would’ve expected, the Spurs swooped in and signed one of the players on the Oklahoma City Thunder’s championship roster.

According to NBA insider Ary, the San Antonio Spurs are signing 2025 NBA champion Adam Flagler to a two-way contract.

Flagler was a two-way player for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season and played a contributing role in their championship journey.

“The San Antonio Spurs are signing NBA champion Adam Flagler, league sources tell me. Flagler spent last season with the Oklahoma City Thunder on a two-way contract.

“His representatives at Life Sports worked closely with Spurs officials to finalize the agreement. San Antonio continues to add depth ahead of training camp, recently reaching deals with both Adam Flagler and Micah Potter.”

Flagler is on a two-way contract and could very possibly be relegated to the Spurs’ G-League team next season. But his figures suggest he would cause more problems than fix them for the Spurs.

Adam Flagler was a terrible shooter with OKC Thunder

Adam Flagler didn’t get to play much for the OKC Thunder last season, being a two-way player. But when he did get some minutes, a glaring problem became evident.

For the season, Flagler shot just 26.0% from the field and 19.4% from beyond the arc. Even for a limited two-way player, these are very poor numbers.

And why this makes the Spurs’ signing all the more confusing is that they sorely need some accurate shooters at the guard spot.

Neither Harper nor Castle are strong outside shooters. While De’Aaron Fox is reliable, even his strongest supporters wouldn’t consider him an expert at making shots from range.

Perhaps Flagler’s signing was made without considering their first-team needs. And after all, the Spurs could waive Flagler before the start of the new season if he fails to make an impression.

But it’s hard to understand why the Spurs would use one of their valuable two-way spots on a player who can’t shoot well at the NBA level.
