SAN ANTONIO – A 40-mile police chase ended with the suspect facing numerous felony charges.
At about 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, deputies responded to a burglary call on the 5300-block of FM 541 in southern Atascosa County. This property had been the location of multiple burglaries in the past.
When deputies arrived, 41-year-old Roman Gomez was spotted fleeing the property. Police say he smashed through a fence with his pickup truck and trailer.
Deputies ran back to their vehicles and chased down Gomez. Deputies were able to use spike strips to flatten one of the suspect’s tires. Texas troopers joined in with even more spike strips and successfully deflated more tires on the pickup.
Gomez continued to flee north, driving on the rims of the truck, with both Atascosa County deputies and Texas troopers in pursuit.
Gomez continued north and was spiked once again by Pleasanton police, but he continued on Highway 281 all the way to Loop 410 in San Antonio where he was spiked yet again by another officer. He then turned east on the Loop 410 access road and hit a trooper’s vehicle, ultimately crashing his own vehicle.
But Gomez still wouldn’t give up and fled on foot near Loop 410 and Presa. An Atascosa County patrol deputy ran Gomez down on foot and took him into custody.
Gomez was arrested and transported back to the Atascosa County Jail where he is being charged with Evading Arrest in a Motor Vehicle-3rd degree Felony, Evading Arrest on Foot- Class A Misdemeanor, Burglary of a Building-State Jail Felony, and Criminal Mischief-State Jail Felony. Gomez also had an active warrant out of Bexar County for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1.
Additional charges are pending for offenses committed in Bexar County and additional charges may be filed in Atascosa County after the investigation is complete.
No one was injured during this police chase.
