Police are searching for the driver and passengers of an allegedly stolen car that crashed on the Bowen Bridge in Hobart’s north.

Police said witnesses stopped to help the people who were in the vehicle.

However, the driver and passengers left the scene and were now “unaccounted for”, police said.

The extent of their injuries is not known.

Police boats and a rescue helicopter are involved in the search.

Earlier, the westbound lane of the bridge was closed, causing peak hour city traffic needing to cross the bridge to head further south to the Tasman Bridge, causing delays.

About 9am police said the Bowen Bridge had fully reopened.

Police are still investigating.
