California Coast Credit Union has opened a new branch in Logan Heights, an area that has long lacked banks and similar financial institutions.
“The opening of this branch in the city of San Diego’s Promise Zone is a significant investment in, and commitment to, the community,” said Robert Scheid, the credit union’s spokesman.
The new credit union, at 2040 Imperial Ave., is a full-service branch. That means its customers will be able to open new checking and savings accounts, apply for loans and credit cards, do business banking and apply for home loans. It also has a coin machine, check cashing and a “tech bar.”

“Our Tech Bar provides free access to computers and high-speed Wi-Fi to help you manage your finances, complete online banking tasks, or access digital resources in a comfortable, secure space. Whether you need to check your email, print documents, or get assistance with digital banking tools, our Tech Bar is here to support you,” its website says.
In contrast to downtown, which is immediately on the other side of the Interstate 5 and is dense with banks and credit unions, Logan Heights has historically lacked such services. A search on a map website shows ATMs are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Other financial businesses there include a car title loan provider and a money transfer service. This is the only credit union or bank in Logan Heights, according to the map website.
Logan Heights is part of a federally designated Promize Zone, one of 22 across the U.S. The federal government defines these “high poverty communities where the federal government partners with local leaders to increase economic activity, improve educational opportunities, leverage private investment, reduce violent crime, enhance public health and address other priorities identified by the community.”
The credit union, which opened Saturday, identified this neighborhood as a place where it wants to expand its presence. It has several other branches in downtown and throughout San Diego County.
