Advance utility and structural locate work for the new State/Lake CTA station will begin this month, the Chicago Department of Transportation said Monday.
The work, coordinated with the Chicago Transit Authority, will require lane closures on Lake Street beginning Aug. 18 and on State Street beginning Aug. 25. The early phase will not involve demolition and will not affect service at the existing State/Lake elevated station.The work, expected to last three to four months, will focus on potholing — also known as daylighting — to locate and verify the position of underground utilities and structures ahead of major excavation. The process involves excavation, drilling, boring and vacuum excavation, with jackhammers used when obstructions are found. Regular work hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and access to all businesses will be maintained.
The $ project will replace the more than 100-year-old station with a modern, fully accessible facility featuring wider platforms, elevators to both elevated and subway levels, a glass canopy covering the platforms, improved lighting and safety features, and upgraded pedestrian crossings.
A full closure of the current station will be required in a later phase for demolition and new construction. The rebuilt station is expected to be completed in 2029.More information is available at www.statelakestation.org.
