FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — Monday night, several leaders came together for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Jean and Hugh K Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion.
This facility is named after former South Carolina state senator, the late Hugh Leatherman and his wife, Jean.
To have our names on this building is an honor beyond words,” Jean Leatherman, lead advocate, said. “But the true honor lies in what will happen within these walls.
This new $100 million behavioral health facility will offer a wide range of mental health services, from crisis stabilization and triage to telehealth, outpatient and inpatient care.
It stands as a beacon of hope for individuals and families who may be facing some of the most difficult moments in their lives,” Leatherman said. “It says to them you’re not alone, you matter, and help is here.

Leaders from all over the state attended tonight’s ceremony, offering their support, including South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
Today, at this collaboration among all these different talents, these different assets, these different parts, it’ll address the situation, the problems, the deficiencies one way or another,” McMaster said. “This is the answer, you can’t do it with a single talent, or a single discipline, you have to have them all working together. Particularly in mental health, because there is so much to it. So you have to take a comprehensive approach, and this place does that.
The facility will feature a 63-bed inpatient psychiatric unit for patients in need of acute care.
It’s a collaborative effort between McLeod Health, the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, Francis Marion University, and Hope Health.
The pavilion is located at 121 E. Cedar Street in Florence.
They’re expected to begin servicing their first patients by the end of this month.
The new facility is also expanding support for teens and adolescents.
