Syracuse, N.Y. — Central New York could tie or break a heat record today as temperatures soar into the 90s again.

On Wednesday, there’s a chance for a slight relief from the heat and some much-anticipated rain as a cold front moves through.

The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 95 degrees this afternoon in Syracuse. That would tie the Aug. 12 record, set in 2002.

A high of 95 would also tie for the hottest day of 2025 so far. The temperature reached 95 degrees on June 24.

Today would be the fourth consecutive day of temperatures in the 90s in Syracuse. Three in a row constitutes an official heat wave.

Syracuse usually sees about 10 days of 90 degrees or hotter each year. So far in 2025 there have been 15 days that hot.

Humidity will be high today, too, making the air feel several degrees warmer than the thermometer indicates.

We’ll get a slight reprieve Wednesday through Friday, when a cold front — relatively speaking — pushes through Upstate New York. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s.

“This front will bring widespread and much-needed showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening,” the weather service said.

The rain likely won’t be enough to make up the deficit of the past few weeks, when little rain has fallen across most of the area.

By the weekend, high temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 80s. The 90s return for the weekend.
