If you’ve been sharing your HBO Max password with others outside your household, the party is over. Or rather, the party is about to cost an extra $7.99 per month.

According to Fortune, HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) will no longer turn a blind eye when HBO Max users share their account with those who do not live with them. Starting next month, HBO Max account holders can expect to see a $7.99 charge per month if they are caught are doing this.

This fee isn’t new, but hasn’t been strongly enforced in the past. According to the outlet, WBD streaming chief JB Perrette is ready to take action in September.

Perrette explained that for months, the company has been going through its users to determine “who’s a legitimate user, who may not be a legitimate user.” With this information, Perrette stated, “we are putting the net in the right place, so to speak.”

HBO Max isn’t the first streaming service to weed out non-paying users. In 2023, Netflix began enforcing a crackdown, locking out users who accessed the account from devices not connected to the primary account holder’s internet. Last year, Disney+ also implemented similar measures. Both platforms rolled out options for the account holder to pay an additional monthly fee to allow password sharing, just as HBO Max will be doing.

The $7.99 monthly fee for password sharing is still cheaper than signing up for an individual HBO Max account. However, it ultimately depends on whether the account holder is willing to pay the extra fee.

For those who might lose access to HBO Max in the near future, you can make your own account here. Monthly plans range from $9.99 to $20.99 a month. Users can save 16% on all plans by subscribing for a full year instead of opting for month-to-month payments.

In addition to offering all HBO original content, old and new, from “The Sopranos” to “The Last of Us,” HBO Max also offers programming from Warner Bros., Discovery Channel, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, TBS, TNT, Eurosport, and more.
