Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo from the Arizona Diamondbacks were selected by ESPN analysts who re-ranked the top 50 players in MLB.

This season has been full of ups and down for the Diamondbacks. Despite injuries to some key players and by the bullpen, this trio has met or exceeded expectations.

ESPN’s MLB experts used their preseason top 100 list as a comparison, which included Carroll and Marte but not Perdomo.

Corbin Carroll at No. 18 in both rankings

Carroll is leading the league in triples (14) and has set a career high with 26 home runs. Before the season, Bradford Doolittle expected Carroll to join a rare list.

Season prediction: Only four players since 1901 have had a season with 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 steals: Wildfire Schulte (1911), Willie Mays (1957), Jimmy Rollins (2007) and Curtis Granderson (amazingly also 2007). Expect Carroll to join that list in 2025.

Carroll is on track to join the list with six more triples and steals. Carroll held steady at No. 18, with Jeff Passan writing that he’ll continue to get better throughout his career.

What to expect from here: His strikeout rate spiked to 21% in the second half last year, when he shook off a bad first half and finished with aplomb, and this year, he’s striking out in nearly a quarter of his plate appearances. Carroll is continuously trying to find that balance between patience and aggressiveness at the plate, and when he does — the old Trout skill — watch out.

Ketel Marte jumps two spots despite emotional season

At the start of the season, analysts had Marte at No. 22 with big expectations. Doolittle predicted that Marte would put up MVP numbers.

It has been quite a journey from there to 2024, when Marte cranked 36 bombs (in 136 games) and finished third in NL MVP balloting.

Season prediction: Marte stays off the IL, plays 150-plus games and has his first season with 40 homers, 100 RBIs and 100 runs.

While Marte missed time on the IL and hasn’t reached those numbers, he moved up two spots at No. 20. He is still regarded as one of the best hitters for the Diamondbacks.

Now 31, Marte has been at a 154 OPS+ since reaching an age when middle infielders are supposed to hit their downside. He has been doing it long enough for Arizona that he’s now third on the Diamondbacks’ all-time WAR leaderboard.

The Diamondbacks don’t seem likely to make the playoffs, but Marte has a chance to earn a few down-ballot MVP votes once again. — Doolittle

Geraldo Perdomo’s breakout season earns spot at No. 44

Perdomo was not included in the original rankings by ESPN, but his performance so far this season is notable. Entering Tuesday, Perdomo sat at 78 RBIs and 12 home runs, career highs for both.

Kiley McDaniel praised Perdomo for the season he is having with the Diamondbacks, adding that he has a bright future ahead of him.

What he has done so far: Perdomo was long admired as a prospect because of his well-rounded skillset that lacked only power. This season has been his breakout, as his in-game power has ticked up to fringe-average while the rest of his profile is above average-to-plus — the makings of a perennial All-Star.

Two Diamondbacks players fail to make new rankings

Two Diamondbacks starting pitchers failed to make the top 50 despite being in the original rankings.

Corbin Burnes ranked No. 24, but no one could predict he would have his season cut short due to Tommy John surgery.

Burnes was acquired in the offseason as a free agent from the Baltimore Orioles and is expected to miss most of the 2026 season, as well.

Zac Gallen was placed at No. 52 before the season but is not living up to what analysts predicted.

Season prediction: Gallen worked out of the strike zone far too often last season, contributing to some erosion in his numbers. Expect that to regress in a good way, with him returning to his accustomed ERA in the 3-to-3.30 range and throwing more innings than he was able to in 2024.  — Doolittle

Gallen has an ERA of 5.31 at the moment, which is a career-worst for him. Gallen remains on the squad after the trade deadline with an expiring contract at the end of the season.
