Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya was carted off the field Wednesday after suffering a frightening injury during a game against the Blue Jays.

Amaya was running to first base in the top of the eighth inning when he lunged at the bag. He hit the corner of the base awkwardly, sprawling to the turf at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Cubs trainers immediately came to his aid, and a cart was quickly summoned to take him off the field. Amaya was visibly shaken after the play, with the Marquee broadcast showing him crying as he was taken off the field.

Amaya had just returned to the Cubs’ lineup after missing nearly three months with a strained oblique muscle, making his first start in Wednesday’s game against Toronto.

We will update this story with details as they become available.
