PHOENIX – Authorities on Wednesday released the identity of a woman killed in a wrong-way collision on an Valley freeway earlier this week.

Emma Huckleberry, 21, of Waddell died in the crash on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway near the Tempe-Phoenix border, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

DPS also revealed that the wrong-way driver is a 44-year-old man. He remains in the hospital with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.

The driver of a third vehicle involved in the collision fled the scene and remains outstanding.

How did deadly wrong-way collision on Loop 202 happen?

The incident started just after midnight Monday when a Subaru SUV was spotted traveling east in the westbound lanes of Loop 202 near 24th Street.

The wrong-way SUV sideswiped a Hyundai passenger vehicle before crashing head-on into a Kia passenger vehicle west of Priest Drive and rolling over onto its roof.

Huckleberry, who was driving the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hyundai’s driver left that vehicle abandoned in the median.

Authorities suspect that impairment was a factor in the crash.

The criminal investigation into the wrong-way collision is ongoing.
