A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Phoenix through 10 p.m. on Aug. 13. The warning applied to Maricopa County.
Meteorologists warned of winds as strong as 60 mph. Officials warned of hail as large as 0.75 inches.
A severe thunderstorm was located over Tolleson and was nearly stationary. Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
Locations impacted include: Phoenix, Glendale, Avondale, Goodyear, Tolleson, Laveen, Cashion, Glendale Sports Complex, Arizona State Fairgrounds, Phoenix International Raceway, Downtown Peoria, Downtown Glendale, and Camelback Ranch.
This included the following highways: Interstate 10 between mile markers 128 and 144; Interstate 17 between mile markers 199 and 202; U.S. 60 between mile markers 150 and 160.
The National Weather Service warned: “For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature’s leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.”
Pouring rain came down in Phoenix on State Route 51 and Indian School Road about 8:40 p.m. while thunder and lightning were reported near Tatum Boulevard and Bell Road. Light rain was seen near Bethany Home Road and 16th Street in Phoenix just before 8:50 p.m.
The following highways were also expected to see rain, the weather service said:
- Interstate 17 between mile markers 215 and 229.
- Loop 101 between mile markers 22 and 32.
- SR 51 between mile markers 14 and 15.
