Elected officials and advocates gathered on the steps of Tweed Courthouse in Manhattan this morning, demanding Brooklyn high school student Mamadou Mouctar Diallo be released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

Chants of “Free Mouctar” rang out on Chambers Street as people gathered to rally for his release. Diallo was detained on Aug. 4 following a routine court appearance at 26 Federal Plaza.

2. Hochul unveils online portal with school-by-school cellphone ban policies

Gov. Kathy Hochul has rolled out a new website that allows parents and students to look up how their schools will enforce New York’s new restrictions on smartphones in classrooms, set to take effect this fall.

The site — ny.gov/phonefree — provides searchable information for more than 1,050 public school districts, charter schools and BOCES programs that have already submitted their policies for the 2025-2026 school year, covering roughly 96% of schools subject to the new law, Hochul said in a release.

3. City Council weighs override of Adams’ veto on grocery delivery worker pay

The New York City Council today could move to override Mayor Eric Adams’ veto of a bill that would have raised pay for app-based grocery delivery workers to more than $21 an hour.

The measure, approved last month with a veto-proof majority, aims to boost wages in a growing but low-paid industry.

4. Paterson backs Adams as Mamdani faces hostile reception on Staten Island

Former New York Gov. David Paterson endorsed Mayor Eric Adams’ re-election bid Wednesday, offering the two-term mayor a boost as he faces slipping poll numbers.

The endorsement marked a reversal for Paterson, who had previously backed Andrew Cuomo in the primary.

5. Weekend service suspensions on tap for 4, 5 and 6 train riders

This weekend and next weekend, 4, 5 and 6 train riders will see service suspensions along swaths of the three subway lines.

The MTA said it plans to carry out track replacement work along the lines the weekends of Friday Aug. 15 to Monday, Aug. 18 and Friday, Aug. 22 to Monday, Aug. 25. The suspensions will begin on those two Fridays at 11:30 p.m., with regular service resuming on those two Mondays at 5 a.m.

NY1’s Olivia Leach took a look at the push for more funding for pet-friendly shelters.
