SAN ANTONIO – A teenager was charged with capital murder Thursday in the shooting death of a San Antonio Independent School District student, authorities said.
Fernando Flores, 18, was arrested in connection with the killing of Simon Cuevas, which happened on the afternoon of Apr. 16 near the intersection of South Elmendorf Street and Merida Street on the West Side.

According to the arrest report, officers found Cuevas with a gunshot wound to his stomach; he was rushed to the hospital and died shortly after.
Police said witness statements and surveillance footage from nearby businesses showed Cuevas being followed by several juveniles after leaving school. The assault began when an unidentified suspect in a black hoodie struck Cuevas, followed by Flores and other juveniles who joined in, punching and kicking him. One of the suspects then pulled out a handgun and shot Cuevas while he was on the ground, authorities said.
The group fled the scene immediately afterward.

Investigators traced the suspects’ movements using school surveillance footage, which showed Flores retrieving an item from his mother’s car before entering a brown Buick Enclave with other juveniles. The vehicle’s license plate was later captured by a school bus camera.
The driver of the Buick cooperated with authorities, identifying Flores and the other suspects and outlining their movements before and after the shooting. Investigators also recovered clothing worn during the assault from one of the suspect’s residences.
