La Crosse Fire Department sees spike in drug overdoses

  • August 15, 2025

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – The La Crosse Fire Department is alerting the public of an increase in drug overdoses in the La Crosse community.

According to a press release from the La Crosse Fire Department, within the last three weeks, July 21, 2025, to August 12, 2025, there were an above-average number of suspected overdose response calls from EMS.

“Even with lower death rates this year, complacency in drug use is a dangerous trap- fentanyl can lurk in any illicit substance, from pills to powders. Always test for fentanyl before use, keep Narcan on hand, and ensure a sober bystander is present to administer it or call 911. These precautions aren’t just safety measures; they’re lifelines where one wrong dose can be deadly,” Dr. Christopher Eberlein, EMS Medical Director said.

The La Crosse Fire Department says to always call 9-1-1 if you think someone is overdosing.

The La Crosse Fire Department is also advising people to check-in with friends or family who use drugs and to get safer use supplies, such as fentanyl test strips and Naloxone.
