It’s bound to be a busy weekend with the Chicago Air and Water Show returning to the skies over Lake Michigan and the incredibly popular Savannah Bananas coming to town for the first time.

For those planning to attend either event – or spend any extended period of time outdoors – it’s shaping up to be a hot few days.

The hottest conditions are expected Saturday afternoon with heat index values as high as 99 degrees, though the rest of the weekend won’t be much cooler.

And along with the heat will come the possibility of severe weather.

Here’s what you can expect during the weekend:

FRIDAY NIGHT – (Savannah Bananas vs. the Party Animals at 7 p.m.)

A dry evening will be anything but certain as the Savannah Bananas take on the Party Animals at Guaranteed Rate Field. Thunderstorms are a possibility as the game takes place, according to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists.

Hot conditions will persist, with temperatures in the mid 80s throughout the evening before dropping into the low 80s. The NBC 5 Storm Team indicated the risk of storms could continue into the overnight hours, with the possibility of damaging winds, a slight risk for hail and potential heavy downpours.

The National Weather Service has placed the Chicago area under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five.

SATURDAY MORNING & AFTERNOON – (Air and Water Show from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

The overnight low will only be in the mid 70s, making for a dry and muggy start to the day, meteorologists said.

The heat will prevail later on, however.

Highs are slated to reach the mid 90s, with feels-like temperatures around 100 degrees, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack. Conditions could be clear for the Chicago Air and Water Show, though that’s not certain, as scattered storms could begin to arrive in the late afternoon.

SATURDAY NIGHT – (Savannah Bananas vs. the Party Animals at 7 p.m.)

The severe weather potential continues on Saturday night, with multiple clusters of storms possible. Damaging winds will remain a threat, however, the biggest issue will likely be heavy downpours, Sack said.

Some of the storms moving in on Saturday afternoon and evening could be severe, keeping Chicago under the “marginal” category for severe weather.

SUNDAY MORNING & AFTERNOON – (Air and Water Show from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

Another chance of storms arrives on Sunday, though the hope is to get it out of the way before the Air and Water Show begins. Some sunshine will begin to head toward the Chicago area in the following hours as temperatures sit in the high 80s, along with heat index values in the low 90s.
