Bayern Munich knew they were in for a rude awakening when they squared off against Argentine club Boca Juniors, and they got the full Superclasico treatment. The Rekordmeister managed to eke out a 2-1 win thanks to Harry Kane and Michael Olise, whose goals overcame a Miguel Merentiel equalizer just past the hour mark.
Boca Juniors definitely lived up to the billing
It was widely established that Boca would play a rough game today, and they certainly followed through on that. Sliding tackles, pushes, rough challenges, off the ball fouls, the Argentine club had it all in their locker. The referee was unfortunately gullible enough to not call most of the fouls and produce enough yellow cards.
Michael Olise is the best player in the world
It’s not even a joke anymore. Bayern struggled throughout the match, and Michael Olise had a pretty average game which included a dispossession that led to Boca’s goal. Nevertheless, he managed to score from a corner (ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper) and managed to pull a goal out of the bag and put the Bavarians ahead late into the game.
Raphaël Guerreiro needs to go
When the lineups were announced, there was concern surrounding the player selections. Raphaël Guerreiro was the worst player on the pitch tonight, with Leon Goretzka being the second worst. The Portuguese left-back was consistently exposed and was out of position in the build up to Boca’s goal. Just terrible from him and Goretzka who did nothing of note apart from get booked for dissent after being shoved down easily before a free kick.
Vincent Kompany showing his faults
Circling back to the point about the lineups, Vincent Kompany has made some questionable calls in this match. Putting Jamal Musiala on in such a physical game just after he came back from injury is never a good idea. The 22-year-old ended up playing 25 minutes before being replaced by Thomas Müller. As much as people want to give the Belgian coach more time, such decisions should not be made.
Finish your chances lads
Bayern could have easily had up to five or six goals in this match, but poor finishing meant that they could only have two. Even in the 2025/26 season, a decent team will punish them for missing goal-scoring opportunities.
