Application deadline nearing for people looking to join La. State Police

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The deadline to apply for the Louisiana State Police 108th Cadet Class and potentially become a state trooper is nearing.

According to the law enforcement agency, you must submit your application by Monday, August 18.

The cadet class is a 24-week academy that teaches all of the skills and knowledge needed to join LSP, including defensive tactics, tactical driving, firearms proficiency, lawful use of force, and more. The training is set to begin on January 4, 2026.

Interested applicants must meet certain requirements. They include being at least 21 years old and meeting at least one of the following criteria:

  • Two years of experience as a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Level 1 (or out-of-state equivalent) certified peace officer in a full-time position (whose job duties include armed duty with the power of arrest); or
  • A minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university (must provide transcript or degree); or
  • Any two year combination of Options 1 and 2 above, whereby 30 semester hours will be equivalent to one year of experience; or
  • Three years of continuous active military duty in the United States Military (must provide a DD-214 or letter from current commanding officer verifying service), effective October 1, 2001.
