NSW police are searching for witnesses after a teenage boy died in a crash involving a tractor, a semitrailer and a horse truck towing a caravan.

Emergency services were called to the Kamilaroi Highway, about 10 kilometres east of Wee Waa, just after 3pm Sunday.

The 14-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the horse truck, was given first aid by a passer-by before paramedics arrived, but died at the scene.

Police have called on the man who helped to come forward, saying he may be able to assist with the investigation into the crash.

The Kamilaroi Highway was closed in both directions for 17 hours after the crash but has since been reopened.

The 38-year-old driver of the horse truck was taken to hospital in a stable condition for treatment and mandatory testing.

One horse in the truck had to be euthanased, while three others needed veterinary care.

The 66-year-old man who was driving the tractor and the 33-year-old male driver of the semitrailer were not injured, but taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

The crash is the latest in what has already been a shocking year on NSW roads.

The state’s road toll at midnight last Thursday stood at 228, compared to 194 at the same time last year.
