In the standings

San Francisco Giants (60-64, 3rd in NL West)

The Giants are 11 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and six games out of a playoff spot with three teams to leapfrog. They’ve lost seven of 10, including a three-game sweep by the Padres last week in San Francisco.

San Diego Padres (69-55, 2nd in NL West)

A three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium ruined a five-game winning streak that had carried the Padres to the top of the division. Now they are two games behind LA and a 1½ games behind the Cubs, the NL’s top wild-card team. The Padres are 7-2 so far against the Giants, clinching the season series.

Pitching matchups

Monday

Giants LHP Robbie Ray (9-6, 2.98 ERA)   |   An All-Star for a second time this year, Ray leads the NL with 56 walks but has 152 strikeouts in 148 innings in his first full year of action since 2022 (189 IP, 3.71 ERA). Ray is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA, 13 strikeouts and two walks in 13 innings this year against the Padres. He took the loss in last week’s meeting in San Francisco (6 IP, 4 ER).

Padres LHP Nestor Cortes (1-1, 5.71 ERA)   |   He has a 2.89 ERA in 9⅓ innings since returning from a flexor strain, with both starts coming after the trade from Milwaukee to San Diego. Cortes, like Ray, is making a second straight start against an opponent as he struck out six against one walk while allowing a run in 4⅔ innings last week in San Francisco.

Tuesday

Giants RHP Kai-Wei Teng (1-2, 9.90 ERA)   |   The 26-year-old rookie was knocked around for seven runs—six earned—in 1⅔ innings by the Padres last week in San Francisco. He has struck out eight and walked eight in 10 innings since joining the big-league team. The Padres worked four of those walks last week.

Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (12-4, 2.87 ERA)   |   He matched up with Teng last week, striking out five over 6⅔ innings of one-run ball. Pivetta scattered four hits and a walk in the start. He had allowed eight runs in 11⅓ innings in two previous starts against the Giants. Pivetta has a 2.41 ERA in 13 starts at Petco this season.

Wednesday

Giants RHP Landen Roupp (7-6, 3.45 ERA)   |   He was sidelined for about three weeks with elbow trouble before returning to the Giants’ rotation on Friday, allowing five runs in three innings in a no-decision. Roupp has a 1.93 ERA in 18⅔ career innings against the Padres, but is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts (10⅔ IP) this season.

Padres TBA   |   With Michael King on the injured list and Randy Vásquez optioned out after bulk relief work on Friday, the Padres will likely make a move for this spot. LHP JP Sears (7-10, 5.12 ERA) had been scheduled to start Sunday for Triple-A El Paso, but he did not make the start. He allowed five runs in five innings in his only start after the trade deadline before he was optioned to the minors.

Thursday

Giants RHP Justin Verlander (1-9, 4.23 ERA)   |   The three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall-of-Famer is making his first start against the Padres since 2023 (6 IP, 2 ER) and just his fourth overall (2.95 ERA, 18 ⅓ IP). The 42-year-old struck out eight over seven shutout innings on Saturday in which he allowed just two hits. He has a 2.00 ERA over his last five starts.

Padres RHP Dylan Cease (5-11, 4.61 ERA)   |   He looked like he’d turned a corner (1.64 ERA, 16 strikeouts, 11 IP) when he walked a season-high six batters in 3⅓ innings in Saturday’s loss at Dodger Stadium. Cease has a 1.16 ERA in five wins, a 3.80 ERA in nine no-decisions and a 7.29 ERA in his 11 losses. Cease lost his start against the Giants this year, allowing three runs in five innings in June.

Training room

San Francisco: INF Casey Schmitt is day-to-day after taking a fastball off his forearm on Friday. 3B Matt Chapman is on the 10-day injured list for the second time this season, this time with a sprained hand. The lineup is also without OF Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) and C Tom Murphy (back), while LHP Erik Miller (elbow) is missing from the bullpen.

San Diego: OF Jackson Merrill was pulled from Sunday’s game with ankle discomfort. He rolled his left ankle on Friday and played on Saturday before Sunday’s exit. Merrill is day-to-day. RHP Michael King (knee) returned to the injured list on Thursday but the hope is he returns later this month in Seattle.
