SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – If you live in the 318 area code region, you will have to make phone calls a little different starting next week.
With new telephone numbers in high demand, the Louisiana Public Service Commission approved the addition of a new 457 area code to the existing 318 area code region.
This process is known as an area code overlay.
The overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code but will require dialing the area code and the 7-digit telephone number to complete local calls.

Those who have existing numbers with the 318 area code, your number will not change. The 457 area code will only be added to new numbers.
Beginning Monday, August 25, all local calls made within the 318 area code must be dialed using 10 digits. (Area code + 7-digit telephone number). On and after August 25, calls using just 7 digits will not work and will be routed to an announcement.
Starting Thursday, September 25, new telephone lines may be assigned numbers from the new 457 area code. The 457 area code will co-exist everywhere in this region with the 318 area code. Anyone receiving a 457 number will be required to dial 10 digits as well.
All local calls within the 318 area code that are currently dialed with 7 digits will need to be dialed using 10 digits (area code + 7-digit telephone number).(AT&T)
Louisiana Public Service Commission said it recommends individuals and companies update their websites, personal and business stationery and checks, advertising materials, personal and pet ID tags, and other such items to ensure the area code is included.
