If Texas Republicans approve President Donald Trump’s proposed congressional maps, Bexar County Commissioner Grant Moody (Pct. 3) says he’s interested in helping his party pick up a seat.

Moody represents the North Side and his county commissioner precinct overlaps with the reshaped 35th Congressional District the GOP hopes to create.

He does not live within the new district’s boundaries, he told the San Antonio Report. But members of Congress aren’t required to live in the district they represent.

“I’ve always felt called to serve my community and country, and these new maps present a unique opportunity to continue serving,” Moody said in a statement. “My wife and I are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received and are prayerfully considering whether this is the right race and the right time for our family.”

Texas’ 35th Congressional District currently stretches from Austin to San Antonio — some of the region’s bluest urban territory.

But Trump requested the unusual mid-cycle redistricting process to create five new GOP pickup opportunities in Texas to help offset potential losses elsewhere in the country in the 2026 midterm election.

The result could mean blue San Antonio goes from majority Democratic representation in Congress to a Republican majority.

The proposed maps leave TX35’s current congressman, progressive U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Austin), to compete with fellow Democratic U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) over a single Austin-centric district, or else try again in the new district, which is far from home and much less blue than his current seat.

Meanwhile, the potentially reshaped Texas 35th would stretch east from San Antonio to include Guadalupe, Karnes and Wilson counties, all of which Trump carried.

Trump would have carried the redrawn district by 10 percentage points, but it’s still not considered safety red.

Last week Moody seemed to raise interest in the district, suggesting on social media that Casar would be far too liberal for the new district’s voters.

“Texans are known for our hard work, devotion to selfless service, and conservative values — and they deserve to be represented by someone who shares those ideals,” Moody said in the statement this week.

Bexar GOP Vice Chair Kyle Sinclair has also signaled interest in the seat.
