Federal Forest Service Firefighters are currently battling a fire that ignited near the La Plata Trail. The fire has reportedly expanded from Northern Chaffee County into Southern Lake County.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office posted an alert on its Facebook page at 5:57 p.m. on Monday, August 18. The fire is estimated to be 15 to 20 acres. It is located at a high elevation and is growing in size.
The La Plata Fire is located entirely on National Forest U.S. Forest Service – PSICC National Forest land. No pre-evacuations or evacuations have been called at this time.
Chaffee County Government shared that they and the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office were monitoring the fire, which was first reported in the evening on Sunday, August 17.
The fire start is approximately 2 miles north of La Plata Peak. Chaffee County stated it is “is believed to have been human caused.”
It is currently at 0 percent containment.
People should remain clear of the area to allow responders to focus and do their jobs.
