SAN ANTONIO – Project Marvel drama continued at Monday night’s District 10 town hall meeting.
It was only supposed to focus on the FY 2026 budget, but things got a little tense between councilman Marc Whyte and the mayor.
The heated exchange opened the conversation about Project Marvel right away, though Whyte tried to keep things about the city’s bank account.
“Tonight we need to stay focused just on the upcoming 2026 budget,” he said.
The topic of project marvel was front-and-center though; Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones — bringing it up first.
“I want independent information and then I want to make sure your good councilman gives it to you,” she said early on in the meeting.
“The dishonesty unfortunately continues,” Councilman Whyte started. “We had an agreement literally 5 minutes ago that we would allow the mayor to come up and speak if we kept it to the budget, and not project marvel.”
People in the crowd called for Mayor Jones to take her seat. She tried to respond; Councilman Whyte didn’t giving her any more time to speak.
“Mayor, respectfully, you’ve had your opportunity Mayor,” he said.
Just this afternoon, Jones doubled down on her request to slow down the process of building a new downtown Spurs arena.
The organization released a term sheet Monday for the council to vote on. The terms include:
- No added costs for tax payers
- No money taken away from the city’s general fund.
Councilman Whyte asked neighbors to save their questions for a Marvel-specific meeting planned for September. He added his belief that term sheet will answer the big ones.
“We have to get you all the information before November so that you know what you’re voting on,” Whyte said during the town hall.
People we spoke to emphasized that they’re not against the Spurs, but they want to make sure a new arena is going to be the right fit.
Questions about Project Marvel came up through the rest of the meeting. Many people asked why some councilmembers are ready to move things along.
Councilman Whyte again said he’d like to keep the meeting about the budget, while saying he and his colleagues believe the term sheet has all the information the community needs.
The council will vote on a resolution in regard to the term sheet on Thursday. We’ll bring you their decision then.
