Three New Hampshire residents had a close encounter with a shark while fishing off the Maine coast. Whitney Fitzgerald of Dover said she was with her boyfriend, Luke Ramsey, and his father, Christopher Ramsay, when they spotted the shark near Moody Beach in Wells, Maine, around 7 a.m. Saturday. At first, Fitzgerald said she thought the shark was a dolphin, and Luke Ramsey thought it was a baby whale, until it swam closer to their boat.”And so we turned around and kind of started to follow the fin with our boat, and we got right up close to it and saw that it was in fact not a dolphin. And it was maybe a shark. What kind, I don’t know, but it was right there,” Fitzgerald said. >> Download the free WMUR app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play > Subscribe to WMUR’s YouTube channel
WELLS, Maine —
Three New Hampshire residents had a close encounter with a shark while fishing off the Maine coast.
Whitney Fitzgerald of Dover said she was with her boyfriend, Luke Ramsey, and his father, Christopher Ramsay, when they spotted the shark near Moody Beach in Wells, Maine, around 7 a.m. Saturday.
At first, Fitzgerald said she thought the shark was a dolphin, and Luke Ramsey thought it was a baby whale, until it swam closer to their boat.
“And so we turned around and kind of started to follow the fin with our boat, and we got right up close to it and saw that it was in fact not a dolphin. And it was maybe a shark. What kind, I don’t know, but it was right there,” Fitzgerald said.

They said it was their first time seeing a shark in Maine.
“To see something that big and kind of beautiful is kind of cool to me,” Christopher Ramsey said. “And yes, I mean if I didn’t think it would eat me, I would have jumped in with it, with a dive suit. It was hard to leave it. Dolphins are really cool too, but that was spectacular.”
The trio said they made sure not to disturb the shark and encouraged others to do the same.
Shark expert John Chisholm told News 9 the shark was a mako, and he said sightings like this are not uncommon at this time of year.
“The white sharks are getting all the attention, but this is another species that’s out there,” Chisholm said. “We see them every year. Fishermen, especially offshore fishermen, encounter them pretty regularly.”
The New England Aquarium says makos are an endangered species and have been protected in Maine since 2022.
Officials are reminding people to report any shark sightings and to stay safe.
