Phoenix is about to get a front-row seat to the universe. On Saturday, Oct. 18, the Arizona Science Center will reopen the Dorrance Planetarium — now branded the Dorrance DOME — after a sweeping renovation that leaders say makes it one of the most advanced digital domes in the world.
The overhaul brings a high-resolution LED dome powered by Cosm’s CX system, boasting 8K plus clarity and 100 times the brightness of standard projection. Visitors can expect seamless, wraparound visuals that turn a night at the planetarium into a journey through galaxies, oceans or even live performances.
“Visitors are not just watching,” said Guy Labine, president and CEO of Arizona Science Center. “They are immersed in storytelling, space exploration and scientific discovery. The Dorrance DOME is reimagining STEAM education and setting a new standard in scientific storytelling.”
The planetarium’s 194 seats include 106 premium fixed seats and 88 movable chairs, allowing for flexible events. Programming will span classic astronomy shows, STEM education, concerts and community gatherings.
Jacquie Dorrance, whose family foundation has long supported the center, said the new dome is the first of its kind in Arizona and only the second in the nation. “It embodies our unwavering commitment to creating a lasting, positive impact on communities across Arizona,” she said.
The reopening is part of the Science Center’s broader Visitor Experience Renewal Plan, designed to elevate the downtown institution into a world-class destination for science and culture. The planetarium has been a staple since the late 1970s and remains one of the most popular attractions for school field trips and family visits.
Advance ticket sales open to the public on Aug. 20. Guests can subscribe to the Science Center’s newsletter for early access to tickets, preview events and programming updates.
