Recently renamed one of the five best sandwiches in the United States, and the best in Texas on Yelp, Tony’s Italian Delicatessen in Montgomery, with a second location in Tomball, is a go-to for high-quality and homemade Italian sandwiches.
With names inspired by Italian icons, both fictional and real, the venue features an excellent array of sandwiches ranging from the meat-lovers’ Stallone to the sopressata and Genoa salami-based F. Sinatra.
Its #1, at least according to Yelp, is The Sophia, made with roasted turkey, roasted red peppers, Roma tomatoes, Swiss cheese, basil pesto mayo, a spring mix, and sub oil on an Italian roll.

Famed for its endless menu and mammoth meals, Kenny & Ziggy’s Delicatessen is a Houston institution. Born in 1999, the New York-inspired deli features an array of Big Apple classics such as its triple-smoked pastrami on rye, in-house-pickled corned beef, as well as create-your-own grilled cheeses, prime roast beef, and more.
As such, the only limitation here is your appetite. While the prices range in the $16.95 – $24.95 area, their sandwiches are famously sky-scraper-sized and feeding if a date, possibly even a double date.

3. Stuffed Belly
Stuffed Belly is a sandwich concept from wife-and-husband team: Masterchef winner, Christina Ha, and restauranteur, John Suh – the team behind Houston’s renowned Vietnamese restaurant, The Blind Goat. The drive-thru concept focuses on American sandwich and comfort food concept.
Favorites here include the Patty Melt (called the Belly Melt), Sichuan Chicken, and Humpty Dumpty Egg’wich sandwich. The venue also offers an array of breadless and keto-friendly options as well as its hit tater tots and loaded tater tots. Visitors can also delight in an array of house-spun sodas including the Dirty Dr. Pepper and Orange Creamsicle.

4. Thien An Sandwiches
Thien An Sandwiches is a homey, Vietnamese diner in Midtown. The no-frills, family-run establishment is known for its vibrant dishes including crepes, spring rolls, pho, and some of the best banh mi in Houston.

5. Antone’s
Established in 1962 by Lebanese-Syrian immigrant, Jalal E. Antone, the eponymous Antone’s is a historic sandwich shop renowned for its signature cold Po’ Boys. The once neighborhood deli has since become one of the most recognized sandwich brands in the city. If you haven’t already, be sure to order The Original with salami, ham, provolone, and its signature chow chow relish.

No need to venture out to Mordor for second breakfast, find a magical array of scrumptious sandwiches at Hobbit Cafe on Richmond Ave. Opened in 1972 as Houston’s original mead bar, the Hobbit Cafe offers a smorgasboard of quesadillas, salads, burgers, tacos, and more.
Included, are wide array of sandwiches. Fitting with the Tolkien theme, featured sandwiches include the Gandalf, Smaug’s Delight, and Shire – the latter made with avocado, tomato, fresh tabouli alfalfa sprouts, with mayo.

7. Ploughman’s Deli & Cafe
Repeat feature on local and national best-of sandwich lists, including Food Network’s 51 Best Delis in the Country, Ploughman’s Deli & Cafe is a quirky, sci-fi themed cafe in Garden Oaks. Favorites at Ploughman’s include its corned beef-packed reuben served on marbled rye, meatball sub on French bread, and a not-so-typical ham and egg sandwich on ciabatta roll.

Co-founded by UH alums, Ronnie and Linda Nguyen, Roostar is a renowned Vietnamese restaurant celebrated for its custom banh mi, rice, and noodle dishes. In its Vietnamese street vendor-reminiscent atmosphere, Roostar uses fresh, high-quality ingredients to make its delicious Banh Mi sandwiches. Tucked into Montrose, Paulie’s is a laid-back spot known for its scratch-made pastas, stacked sandwiches, and satisfying dinner plates.
