Study looked at 26 key metrics that make a city fun and San Diego helped move California into the top spot.
SAN DIEGO — A new study by WalletHub, ‘Most Fun States in America in 2025,’ has ranked California as the most fun state in the United States, with San Diego contributing significantly to the Golden State’s top position. The study, which evaluated 26 different metrics, placed Florida, Nevada, Illinois and New York in the following spots.
“Oh, I 100% agree that California is the best state,” said National City resident Mike Gutierrez. “Sunny weather… beaches are beautiful… You can find seashells anywhere and everywhere.”
WalletHub’s analysis considered factors such as the number of attractions, restaurants, fitness centers, performing arts theaters, and music festivals per capita. However, the variety of arts, entertainment, and recreation establishments, along with the high cost of living, were identified as weaknesses for the state.
“San Diego ranks high in a lot of [areas], but it does get dinged for being cost-prohibitive,” said Chip Lupo, a writer and analyst for WalletHub.
Lupo emphasized the importance of fun activities, noting that they can boost mental, physical, and emotional health by providing a wide range of options for residents and visitors alike.
The study’s findings resonate with both locals and tourists. Sky, a 10-year-old visitor from the Bay Area, expressed her enthusiasm while enjoying Belmont Park.
“I think California is very fun,” she said.
As for which town in California is the most fun, Sky’s dad and CBS 8 didn’t exactly agree. In response to CBS 8’s claim that San Diego is better than San Francisco, he replied, saying, “Nah, I can’t agree with you on that one, but San Diego, since we’ve been here, has been very fun.”
However, he did agree on the survey’s findings.
“California is the best, definitely,” Sky’s dad said with a smile.
West Virginia ranked last in the fun rankings, highlighting the stark contrast between states in terms of recreational opportunities and entertainment options.
This study underscores the diverse array of activities and attractions that contribute to California’s appeal, solidifying its reputation as a top destination for both residents and tourists seeking enjoyable experiences.
