SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Calling hours will be held Thursday for retired New York State Police Sgt. Frederick Scheidt Jr., who died Aug. 13 from cancer stemming from his service at the World Trade Center site following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Scheidt, a resident of the hamlet of Middle Grove in Saratoga County, was 67.
Scheidt worked 30 years with the State Police, retiring Oct. 14, 2009, while assigned to Troop G in Saratoga. He served as retiree liaison for the New York State Trooper Police Benevolent Association and president of the Association of Former New York State Troopers, according to his obituary.
Scheidt deployed with the New York State Police to support rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero.
“His death is a solemn reminder of the lasting toll borne by those who responded selflessly in the aftermath of that tragic day,” State Police said in a statement.
Scheidt was born in Greenwich, Conn., and graduated Greenwich High School, Norwalk Community College and Iona College.
He is survived by his wife, Shannon, son Brandon, and other family and friends.
Calling hours for Scheidt will be held from 2:45–3 p.m. Thursday for members of law enforcement, and 3–7 p.m. Thursday for members of the public in the William J. Burke & Sons Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes in Saratoga Springs. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Bethesda Episcopal Church, Saratoga Springs.
Burial will be private.
