Maxwell’s, the legendary Hoboken, NJ bar/club which hosted a Who’s Who of puk/indie/alternative rock in the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s (and was the location for Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” video) is getting a documentary made about it. Titled No Backstage at Maxwell’s, the film is directed by Paul Rachman (American Hardcore) and features interviews with Bob Mould, The Feelies, Yo La Tengo (who did their Hanukkah shows there till it closed in 2013), origin owner Steve Fallon, later booker/owner Todd Abramson, and lots more. You can watch a teaser trailer for it below.
“Maxwell’s wasn’t just a club—it was a community. It was a proving ground,” says Rachman. “It was where music scenes collided, friendships were forged, and bands found both their audience and their soul.”
The film is still in production and producers have put out a call for live performance footage and photos shot at the club over the years. “Any and all submissions are welcome – nothing is considered too raw or unprofessional – it’s all part of history.” Says producer Claudia Sullivan adds, “Your memories could help preserve the legacy of this legendary space for generations to come. We’re asking for help from those who lived it.”
