Wednesday‘s anticipated new album Bleeds is exactly one month away (it arrives September 19 via Dead Oceans), and today they shared its fourth single, “Bitter Everyday.” It’s a grungy indie rock song that sounds like trademark Wednesday, and it comes with a video by Ben Turok shot in Lake Santeelah in Western North Carolina. Singer/guitarist Karly Hartzman says:

“Bitter Everyday” is a song formed around my desperate desire to tell the story about how in 2019 this lady came up on our porch at like 3 in the morning when Jake [aka MJ Lenderman] and our friend Andrew were out there drinking and playing guitar. She asked them if she could sing them a song she had written, she had an incredible voice. They recorded a voice note of it and showed it to me the next morning when I woke up. I knew which lady it was, she was a houseless person who walked around the downtown area a lot. Weeks later, I was walking home from work and I saw a photo of her on a telephone pole. It was an old mug shot of her, and she was done up in juggalo makeup. The description on the paper said she was wanted for murder. The chorus is an homage to Iris DeMent’s song “Easy’s Gettin’ Harder Everyday.”

Check it out below.

The song comes one day after Karly was in NYC for a private album preview event at Night Club 101 that included an album listening session, a conversation with music journalist Holden Seidlitz, and an intimate, 5-song solo performance. We got stories about the songs she played, and even more about the lyrics during the Q&A. We heard some wild stories about the late Gary King, who owned the Haw Creek property where Karly and other Asheville musicians lived, who inspired Colin Miller’s entire new album, and who has a song named after him on the new Wednesday album for the second time in the band’s history.

We also heard about how very important her home state of North Carolina is to her, her music and the identity of the band Wednesday. She talked about the album having a song that finds her screaming the whole time and said that she wants to make a whole screamy album at some point. And in contrast, she called the album’s beloved, country-leaning lead single “Elderberry Wine” the hardest song for her to sing. She didn’t play the full screamy song during her set, but she was met by lots of cheers in the moments she screamed, and of course “Elderberry Wine” was a hit too. Watch a video of her playing that one below.

The whole Wednesday band will be in NYC when their tour hits Brooklyn Steel on November 11 & 12 with support from Daffo. All upcoming dates are listed below.
