“Do residents realize the cause of San Diego’s dysfunction?” (Aug. 13): A recent letter writer lays the blame for the city’s myriad problems solely on Democrats. Certainly, having one political group pulling the levers of power is unhealthy (one need look no farther than the dysfunction of our current federal government to verify this).

However, I would argue that San Diego’s problems have bipartisan origins. It was during the administration of Republican Mayor Susan Golding that the failure to adequately fund pension obligations began.

And it was during the administration of Mayor Kevin Faulconer, another Republican, that the city acquired 101 Ash Street, an ongoing disaster (then-City Council member Todd Gloria, a Democrat and now our mayor, approved of the deal).
